What is this website all about?

Well, my family (my wife and I with three little kids) have decided to be “more veggies and less meat and dairy-atarians”? Bunnies love carrots… and so do we. We have a stack of Vegan cookbooks and lots of desire to change our habits.

Here are our goals:

Goal 1: Compile family favorite recipes and do food reviews

We want to come up with a whole list of family favorites to eat and prep quickly, so the default meal isn’t just some hunk of meat. The food reviews topic will be about how are we compiling this list and finding favorite products- how we modify recipes, etc. Can we compile a list of recipes that the whole family eats and loves with no meat and no dairy?

Goal 2: Find local resources and change our garden focus

We already garden, but with a task of feeding us, rather than just be something beautiful- we might have to do a lot less flowers, and lots more vegetables.  We also might have to expand. Also, we know a ton of local resources for the was that we have always eaten, but since we have changed the way we eat- we have new objectives in mind.  What are the best local resources for our food needs and can we grow some of them ourselves in our small Minnesota garden?

Goal 3: Be practical for a kids palette

We have three kids- who aren’t going to be as experimental as we are, so modify, simplify and experiment with what the kids will and won’t tolerate.  Is this going to be possible?  You bet it is!

Goal 4: Don’t make this a big deal

I think that it was Mark Bittman who said that while he tries to eat healthy at home, he is far more conscious of being a polite guest and eats whatever is put in front of him while dining at other people’s homes.  That sounds about right to us.  It is easy enough to not drink milk at other people’s homes and at restaurants, but we are never going to worry about eating healthy outside of the home (at this point), just cook better and look for different restaurants- when we can help it.
